Method for Measuring Parallel Capacitors Using a Capacitance and Inductance Tester

 The capacitance and inductance tester is mainly used for online measurement of capacitors in substations. It has many features such as fast testing speed, high accuracy, and flexibility, making it popular among electrical workers. Among its applications, testing parallel capacitors is one of the frequent tests. This article uses the YTC720capacitance and inductance tester as an example to briefly introduce the method for measuring parallel capacitors using the capacitance and inductance tester.

Before testing, correctly connect the power cord and signal cables according to the usage requirements.

        (1)Connect one end of the test voltage cable to the instrument's [Voltage Output Terminal];

        (2)Plug the test current signal cable into the instrument's [Current Sampling Plug];

        (3)Connect the 220V power cord of the test instrument;

        (4)Clamp the test voltage cables onto the connecting busbars at both poles of the capacitor bank under test, and clamp the clamp-type current sampling meter onto the bushing of the single capacitor to be measured;

        (5)Close the [Power Switch];

        (6)After powering on, the screen displays the first screen; if a white screen appears, press the reset button directly.

        Move the cursor to [Settings], enter the third screen to set parameters, and set [Equivalent Impedance] to [Parallel Capacitance] mode. Press the [Confirm] key to save the settings and return to the main menu.

        Move the cursor to [Measure], press the [Confirm] key to enter measurement, and set the [Voltage Output Switch] to [ON] to perform capacitance measurement. The data displayed on the LCD screen is the measurement result.

        (7)Remove the clamp-type current meter and clamp it onto another capacitor to be measured until the measurement of that phase is completed.

        (8)After testing, turn off the power, restore all switches on the panel to their pre-test states, and disconnect all wiring.

        Before using the capacitance and inductance tester, electrical workers should thoroughly read the product manual and strictly follow it during testing to achieve the instrument's measurement accuracy.
