Several Issues to Note in Power Cable Maintenance and Testing

As a part of power lines, power cables are widely used due to their low failure rate, safety, reliability, and flexible routing. However, once a fault occurs, maintenance is difficult and dangerous, so special attention should be paid during maintenance and testing.

1 Preparatory Work Before Work

For power cable work requiring power outage, a first-type work ticket should be filled out; for work not requiring power outage, a second-type work ticket should be used. Before starting work, carefully consult relevant route diagrams, arrangement diagrams, and drawings of concealed works. It is necessary to verify in detail that the cable name and nameplate match those written in the work ticket. Only after safety measures are correctly and reliably in place can work begin.

2 Precautions During Work

During work, it is necessary to confirm the cable to be repaired. The cables to be repaired can be divided into two types:

     (1) Cables with terminal head faults or obvious fault points on the cable surface. For such faulty cables, the fault signs are relatively obvious and easy to confirm.

     (2) Cables with no exposed fault points on the surface. For such faulty cables, in addition to checking data and verifying cable names, a cable identification instrument must be used to distinguish them from other live cables in operation. Especially when there are many cables in the same cross-section, it is particularly important to strictly differentiate the cable to be repaired from other live cables. This also effectively prevents misidentification due to incorrect cable labels, which could lead to accidental cutting of live cables.
