Operation, Use, and Precautions of High Voltage Generator

The high voltage generator, also known as the DC high voltage generator, is the traditional name for high voltage power supplies. It is mainly used for DC withstand voltage tests on high voltage electrical equipment such as zinc oxide arresters, power cables, transformers, and generators.

Operation of the high voltage generator:

1. Wiring method:

Place the chassis and the voltage doubling cylinder in appropriate positions, and connect the power cord, cable, and grounding wire respectively. The protective grounding wire, working grounding wire, and the grounding wire of the discharge rod should all be connected separately to the ground terminal of the test object (i.e., single-point grounding). It is strictly forbidden to connect the grounding wires in series with each other.

2. Test operation:

First, perform a no-load voltage increase to verify whether the overvoltage protection setting is sensitive. Then, connect the power supply, press the red button, and the red light will turn on, indicating that the high voltage is connected.

Second, slowly adjust the voltage regulator potentiometer clockwise, and the output voltage will start to increase from zero. After reaching the required voltage, record the ammeter reading for the specified time, and check the control box and high voltage output line for any abnormal phenomena or sounds. Third, reduce the voltage, return the voltage regulator potentiometer to zero, then press the green button to cut off the high voltage and turn off the power switch.

3. Test of the test object:

Conduct leakage and DC withstand voltage tests on the test object. After confirming that the test device is free of abnormalities through inspection tests, the leakage and DC withstand voltage tests on the test object can begin.

Precautions for the high voltage generator:

1. Discharge of large capacitance test objects should be carried out using a discharge rod with a resistance of 100Ω/V. When discharging, do not immediately contact the test object with the discharge rod. Instead, gradually approach the test object with the discharge rod until a certain distance where air gap ionization discharge occurs with a hissing sound. When there is no sound, the discharge rod can be used for discharge, and finally, directly connect the ground wire for discharge.

2. When the DC high voltage is 200kV or above, even if the test personnel wear insulating shoes and are in an area beyond the safe distance, due to the influence of the electric field distribution of the high-voltage DC ion space, several nearby standing individuals may carry different DC potentials. Test personnel should not shake hands with each other or touch the grounding body with their hands, otherwise, there may be a slight electric shock sensation. This phenomenon is more obvious in dry areas and winter, but since the energy is small, it generally does not cause harm to people.

3. After the test is completed, the grounding wire must be hung on the high voltage output terminal before removing the high voltage lead.
